Understanding the UNFCCC: The Importance of Its Subsidiary Bodies

About Changemakers for Agri-food Action

Changemakers for Agri-Food Action” is a series of online webinars that YPARD launched in 2024 with the aim of equipping youth movements, including members of the YPARD Policy Working Group, with the tools, resources, and strategic knowledge needed to participate effectively in major international political processes.

This year’s main theme will be the synergies among the Rio Conventions, particularly as they relate to agrifood systems. This series of webinars aims to strengthen young people’s capacities and leadership so we can understand these interconnections, promote agroecological approaches, and actively participate in the implementation of integrated policies that simultaneously address the challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation.

Background for this session

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) plays a key role in integrating food systems into the global climate agenda by recognizing the close relationship between agriculture, food security, and climate change. In this context, the Subsidiary Bodies (SBs), particularly the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI), have served as key forums for technical and political dialogue among the Parties. Likewise, the “Sharm el-Sheikh Joint Work on Implementation of Climate Action on Agriculture and Food Security” (SJWA) strengthened this process by promoting concrete actions and international cooperation aimed at transforming food systems into models that are more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive in the face of climate change.

Key Objectives:

  • Understand how the UNFCCC is organized, its governance structure, and the issues to be negotiated throughout the year
  • Understand the structure and key topics that will be discussed in SB64
  • Learn about SJWA, its importance for the synergy among the conventions, and the discussion regarding its future in SB64
  • Know the priorities of young people working in food systems ahead of SB64
