GYWG Experience Sharing Sessions | Session 1: Tokenism vs. Meaningful Engagement for Gender and Youth

The Gender and Youth Working Group (GYWG) under CEA-FIRST/IRC invites researchers, policymakers, youth professionals, consortium partners, and development practitioners to participate in the first session of the GYWG Experience Sharing Series:

Back to the Basics: Tokenism vs. Meaningful Engagement for Gender and Youth

This session will explore the difference between tokenistic inclusion and meaningful engagement of women and youth in research, innovation, and policy processes. It will create space for participants to reflect on how institutions can move beyond symbolic representation toward more impactful and equitable participation.

Participants will engage in discussions around:

• Understanding tokenism versus meaningful inclusion

• Practical approaches to improving engagement

• Institutional perspectives and experiences on inclusive participation

• Strengthening gender- and youth-responsive practices within IRC activities

The session contributes to the broader efforts of the GYWG to support institutional mainstreaming, strengthen inclusive governance, and promote active participation of women and youth within agrifood research and innovation ecosystems.
