How can agroecology, just transition and sustainable food systems contribute to addressing climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation?

On 10 September 2026, YPARD will host the next session of its Changemakers for Agri-Food Action webinar series, bringing together young leaders, experts and practitioners to explore the connections between the three Rio Conventions and the future of food systems.

About Changemakers for Agri-Food Action

Launched by YPARD in 2024, the Changemakers for Agri-Food Action webinar series aims to equip youth movements, including members of the YPARD Policy Working Group, with the tools, resources and strategic knowledge needed to participate effectively in major international policy processes.

In 2026, the series focuses on the synergies between the Rio Conventions, particularly the:

• United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
• Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
• United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)

The series seeks to strengthen young people’s understanding of these interconnected agendas and support their meaningful participation in shaping and implementing integrated policies for sustainable food systems.

Why this coversation matters?

Food systems are central to the challenges and solutions associated with climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation. Addressing these challenges requires approaches that move beyond isolated interventions and recognise the connections between environmental sustainability, food security, livelihoods and social equity. Agroecology and just transition offer important pathways for advancing this integrated approach. They can support ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and sustainable production while also promoting decent livelihoods, equity and meaningful participation in decision-making.

For farmers, Indigenous Peoples, women and young people, these approaches can help create opportunities to contribute to and benefit from more inclusive and resilient food systems.

What to expect from the session

The webinar will explore how agroecology and just transition can serve as bridges between the agendas of the three Rio Conventions. It will also highlight experiences, advocacy opportunities and collaboration mechanisms that can strengthen joint action for sustainable food systems.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

• Examine how agroecology and just transition contribute to the objectives of the three Rio Conventions.
• Learn from policies, initiatives and practices that generate shared benefits for climate, biodiversity, land restoration and rural livelihoods.
• Strengthen their capacity to incorporate these approaches into advocacy, project implementation and engagement in international negotiation processes.
• Exchange experiences and explore opportunities for youth-led action and collaboration
